Rat Information
The common Norway or brown rat typically has brownish fur on its back and grey underneath but its colour can vary from white through to black. Adult body length is 200 – 270 mm plus a tail length of 150 – 200 mm.
The mouse found commonly in buildings is the house mouse. The fur colour varies between light brown and grey. Body length varies between 60-90 mm and the tail can add an additional 100 mm. The droppings found are usually black, rod-shaped and 3-6 mm long.
The Brown (Common) Rat and House Mouse can infest both domestic and commercial premises. The most positive proof of any infestation is to see live rats, however you may find evidence of gnawing of wood or electrical cables and/or droppings.
Rats are especially hazardous to humans as they can transmit a number of diseases, Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) amongst them.
