Squirrel Information

The length of an adult squirrel is approximately 25 cm plus 22 cm of tail. Weight is around half a kilo. The body is adapted for climbing and jumping, with sharp claws for gripping and a long bushy tail for balance.

Grey squirrels build nests (dreys) of twigs and leaves in the forks of trees and they may also use tree hollows known as dens. There are two breeding seasons in a year. The first litters are born in February and March after a gestation period of 45 days. Second litters are born in June and July and leave the nest in August and September. Litters average 3 to 4 young. The life span of females is typically between 4 and 6 years, for males it is between 2 and 3 years.

Squirrels are often to be found nesting in lofts and wall cavities and can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage every year and can create health hazards wherever they inhabit.
